At the Goals Setter’s Club, we believe that goals should be broken down into small routines that are achievable. One step at a time. One day at a time. We’d like to encourage every adult to set a goal to become a mentor to our youth, because really, they’re the future.
To be a mentor, you don’t need special skills. As long as you have an ability to listen, can offer your friendship, and guide and encourage a young person, you are able to be a great mentor. You will be amazed by how much you’ll get out of this experience.
A mentor is simply a caring, adult friend who devotes time to a young person. Although mentors can fill any number of different roles, all mentors have the same goal in common: to help young people achieve their potential and discover their strengths, to help define individual goals, to and find ways to achieve them. A mentor encourages positive choices, promotes high self-esteem, supports academic achievement, and introduces the young person to new ideas.
Here’s a simple guide on how to use our Journals for Mentor Monday:
- Find 4 young people to mentor: Start with your family -nieces, nephews, cousins and even your own children. Then reach out neighborhood kids, friends, or even bring some kids home from church (with the parent’s permission, of course!).
- Each Monday, check in with a phone call or email to see how they are doing and offer your advice, resources and/or support.
- On the 1st Monday of every month, visit them and help them review their goals journal. Work on one chapter per month.
It’s that simple! Get started today.
